A hematoma happens when blood collects outside of a blood vessel. This issue can start in any part of the body. Blood vessels include veins and arteries and capillaries. Sometimes these spots are harmless but other times they indicate a serious medical problem. The blood escapes the vessel because of an injury or trauma. The body often looks bruised or swollen when this occurs.

Hematomas appear in many different locations. Each type has its own name based on where the blood collects. Some stay near the surface of the skin. Others happen deep inside the body near vital organs. The location of the hematoma changes its nature and how it behaves.
Hematomas on the Head and Face
Head injuries often lead to specific hematomas. An ear hematoma forms between the ear cartilage and the skin. A scalp hematoma looks like a large bump on the head. A septal hematoma occurs inside the nose area. These types cause visible swelling and discomfort in the face area.
Hematomas Near the Brain
Internal head hematomas are very serious medical issues. A subdural hematoma sits between the skull and the surface of the brain. An intracranial epidural hematoma forms between the skull plate and the lining of the brain. These conditions require quick medical attention because they put pressure on vital structures.
Hematomas on the Body and Limbs
You might see a subungual hematoma under your fingernail or toenail. A subcutaneous hematoma stays just under the skin surface. These are usually less dangerous than internal types. A spinal hematoma happens between the lining of the spinal cord and the vertebrae.
Hematomas in the Organs
Blood can collect inside your internal organs too. A hepatic hematoma occurs specifically in the liver. A splenic hematoma appears in the spleen. A retroperitoneal hematoma sits inside the abdominal cavity but not inside any specific organ. Doctors use special tests to find these internal issues.
Why Do Hematomas Happen
Trauma or injury to the blood vessels causes a hematoma. Common accidents include vehicle crashes and falling from a height. Severe hemorrhage also leads to these blood collections. When a vessel breaks then the blood leaks into the nearby tissue. This leakage creates the hematoma.
Symptoms to Watch For
Hematomas show many different signs and symptoms. You might see skin discoloration or bruising. The area often feels warm to the touch. Inflammation and swelling are very common signs. Most people feel pain or tenderness in the injured spot.
How Doctors Treat Hematomas
Treatment depends on which type of hematoma you have. Small hematomas do not always need medical help. The body usually reabsorbs the blood over time. Doctors suggest over the counter medicine for painful injuries. They sometimes prescribe aspirin to help patients manage the pain. Serious cases require professional medical advice and specific care.
